SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 and KB2551254

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 02:21 AM PDT

Hello,I'm in process of installing several servers with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2. So far I've completed 5 of them and I'm finding a common issue. That Reporting Services fails to start after applying SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2. I've dug a little bit and have found one Connect post where Microsoft says they cannot reproduce it and several blogs indicating removing this KB resolves the issue. My question is this, has anyone else ran into this issue and have differing opinions? The information I've dug up seems a bit inconclusive and nothing concrete. I have however uninstalled it from one server and confirmed it now starts successfully.

Have upgraded from 2005 to 2008R2 but still getting security updates for 2005

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 12:06 AM PDT

Hi there,We've recently upgraded a 2005 SQL cluster (active / active) to 2008 R2. There still seems to be SQL 2005 client tools including SSMS but the version in the registry setting and on the SQL instances is 10.50.4000. I just recently checked for security updates for the server and I was troubled to see that one of them coming up is "Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 Failover Clustering".Has anyone else experienced this or why this is happening and how to resolve this? Thanks,Mike

Reindex task taking for ever

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 06:11 PM PDT

SQL Server 2008 R2 - 10.50.2500. We have a Database, about 35 GB in size, which has got several tables and indexes. I ran a report 'Index Physical Statistics' and it came up with recommendation for rebuild couple of indexes. I tried to rebuild these indexes, all but few wouldn't. The reindex on these few indexes seems to be taking for ever and i had to cancel the reindex task. Below is the detail of the index on which reindex task was taking for ever:IndexName Index Type Partitions Depth Operation RecommendedXXXXXX , Nonclustered, 1, 2, Rebuild Partition Type, Avg Frag%, #Fragments, Avg Pages per Frag, # Pages 1, 50, 2, 1, 2Any ideas? Thanks,Ravi

Backup failed - no SQL agent job

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 09:36 AM PDT

We recently found there are quite a few error logs in sql log:MessageBackupVirtualDeviceFile::PrepareToFreeze: failure on backup device '{4FEEA406-DD73-47D8-BC10-0ADAD6A44D6D}1'. Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.).BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE ADWDB. Check the backup application log for detailed messages. We didn't schedule any SQL agent job backup the databases. And as a dba, I don't think we have any other places scheduled SQL jobs. But our network side do have Unitrends to backup the whole server system. We are not sure if this error is from there. Any clues? Thanks,
